The following statement was issued by the NWS North Webster on 10-19-2007 in reference to the storm of 10-18-2007
(SBT24/7News/AP) The tornado that ripped through southern Elkhart County late Thursday likely had wind speeds of 160 to 165 mph, the National Weather Service reported. The damage encountered by the NWS storm survey team was consistent with a high-end EF3 tornado. Businesses and homes along the track of the tornado received significant damage, though only minor injuries are being reported. Nappanee officials declared a state of emergency, asking people in the city to stay indoors and all businesses to stay closed Friday. The storm damaged 200 to 250 buildings, state police Sgt. Tony Slocum said. Of those, 100 to 150 were destroyed or severely damaged.
